Hudson River Recreation Area, Adirondacks, NY
Not quite stormy, gray clouds skudded across parts of the sky under a blue dome above. From Thurman, the Hudson is slow, broad water, broken occasionally by riffles and small islands in the stream. Flotillas of inner tube enthusiasts are common up here, as are the usual canoes and kayaks. The embankment I climbed down to get her was scooped out and unstable, a clue, along with the denuded trunk, that the river is not always so placid. But today I'm content to take this temporary seat at the river's edge and enjoy summer's peak in this part of the Adirondacks.
